Christmas phonics worksheets for kindergarten
Pages 1, 2, 6 and 7 are the phonics pages. They use word families and CVC words, the short words a kindergartner sounds out in December. Page 7 adds sh, ch and th for 1st grade.
Trim the tree and hang the mittens: word families (pages 1 and 2)
Each tree has a word family on its star, like -an. Your child cuts out nine ornaments, reads the word on each one, then glues it onto the tree that shares its family. Fan, man and pan go on the -an tree.
Page 2 hangs nine mittens on three clotheslines, for -ed, -un and -ot. Read the word, then hang it on the line with the same ending. More families are in our word families guide.
Christmas CVC worksheets: fill in the presents (page 6)
Each present shows a picture and its word with the vowel missing. Start with the picture’s name, then pick the vowel from the bank at the top. The cat is c_t, and the log is l_g. Then your child writes the whole word on the line below. Our CVC word lists have more words by vowel.
Winter digraph page: fill in the mittens (page 7)
Page 7 is the 1st grade page. Each mitten has a picture and a word with two letters missing. The missing letters are sh, ch or th, in shell, fish, chick, chips, teeth and path. Say the picture’s name, then write the two letters that make its sound.
Letters and a pencil warm-up
Pages 3, 4 and 5 work on letters and pencil control.
Christmas tree and mitten letter find (pages 3 and 4)
Your child colors every T red and every t blue, then counts each kind. The ornaments hang on garland lines. A few look-alike letters are mixed in, like I, J, L, F, f and Y. Each count is 6 or less.
Page 4 scatters M and m on snowflakes around a mitten, with N, W, n and w mixed in. Name the letter out loud each time you color one. Next, our letter tracing pages show how to write each letter.
Trace the path (page 5)
Four paths run left to right, from a cat to a hat, a pup to a cup, a fox to a box and a bug to a mug. From top to bottom, the paths are hills, waves, a zigzag and loops, easiest first. Light dashes leave the pencil line easy to see. Say both words. They rhyme.
It’s a Christmas tracing page, with ornaments and stars around the edge. Our fine motor skills for kindergarten guide has more warm-ups.
Read and match: Christmas sentences (page 8)
Five short sentences sit next to five pictures. Your child draws a line from each sentence to its picture.
The cat is in bed. The pup has a gift. All five use short words plus the heart words the, is and a. Read the sentence first. Then find the picture. Late kindergarten and 1st grade both fit this page.
A free Christmas reading game: CVC word puzzles
The Christmas CVC word puzzles are 12 ornaments cut in half. One half has a picture, and the other has its word. The cut is the same on every ornament, so your child matches by reading. Play alone or with a friend. Print them on cardstock if you have it.
Bonus: a Christmas present word family craft
The Christmas present word family craft is a free 3-page PDF. Page 2 is a wrapped present with a door on each side and a big gold bow on top. Open the doors and it asks “What is inside my present?”
Four words from the -og family are inside. They are dog, log, frog and jog. Your child reads each word and writes it. Then they color the one picture of three that matches. The jog picture is a child out for a run.
Page 1 is the front, in red wrapping paper with a gold ribbon and a gift tag for your child’s name. Cut it out, cut it in half and glue a half on each closed door. Page 3 is the same front in black and white, to color. Print it one-sided, at 100%.
Write a letter to Santa
The free Letter to Santa draw and write pack has 4 pages for early writers. Your child traces Dear Santa, picks a gift from a picture word bank and writes it after I want a. Then come label Santa, how to build a snowman (cut, glue in order and write a word) and a sentence to cut and glue in order.
Christmas activities for kindergarten: using these pages in December
Use these pages as a reading center, morning work or a quiet table job before the break.
- Centers. Put the word puzzles at one table and the letter find at another.
- At home. Try one page a day, about 10 minutes, from December 1 to the break.
- Kindergarten: pages 1 to 6. 1st grade: pages 7 and 8, and pages 1 and 6 as a quick review.
- Laminate the letter find pages for dry-erase markers.
The winter pages suit January, and classrooms that keep December activities neutral.
For Christmas sight word pages and sums, our Christmas color by number pack has four color by code sight word pictures and adding pages. If your child liked our Halloween CVC words crafts, page 1 uses the same idea, one word family per tree.
For a cutting break, our free Christmas spiral ornaments turn a paper circle into a hanging elf, Santa, reindeer or tree. Cutting along the spiral line is good scissor practice.
