Short u words have the /u/ sound you hear in up, sun and umbrella. It’s a short, relaxed “uh”. You’ll find the short u words your child will meet first, grouped so they’re easy to practice, plus sentences to read aloud and the few words that look like short u but aren’t. Our free short u words flash cards have 20 picture cards, plus the full word list and sentences on page 2. No signup, no email.

Short u usually comes late in the teaching order, around the same time as short e. Start with our short vowel words guide for all five short vowels side by side, and how long vowels differ.

The short u sound

Relax your mouth. Open your jaw a little. Let a short “uh” come from the throat, like the sound you make when you forget something. “Uh”.

Keep it clipped. Say /u/, not “yoo” (that’s the letter’s name, the long u). And don’t add an extra “uh” after the consonants. bug is /b/ /u/ /g/, not “buh-uh-guh”.

Here’s a cue that sticks. Say /u/ and push an imaginary umbrella up over your head. Umbrella, up, /u/.

Short u words list: CVC words (3 letters)

You’ll find the three-letter short u words grouped by word family. Keep the ending still and change only the first sound.

  • -ug: bug, hug, mug, rug, jug, tug, dug, pug
  • -un: sun, run, fun, bun, nun, pun
  • -ut: cut, hut, nut, but
  • -ub: cub, tub, rub, sub, hub
  • -ud: mud, bud
  • -um: gum, hum, yum, sum
  • -up: cup, pup
  • -us: bus, Gus

Every word here follows the pattern your child already knows from CVC words. One vowel sits between two consonants and says its short sound. If your child can say the sounds but can’t join them, you’re looking at a blending job, not a vowel problem.

Short u words that start with u

Only a few words start with short u, and they’re worth knowing because they carry the sound on its own.

Start with u, all short: up, us, upset, unzip, unpack, unlock, unplug

The un- words are handy. Your child learns a meaning and a sound together, because un means “not” or “undo”.

Start with short u, but with another sound later:

  • umbrella is the classic picture word for /u/. The first sound is short u. The rest of the word (brel-la) has a blend and an unstressed ending, so read it as a whole word for now.
  • under starts with short u. The -er at the end is bossy r.
  • uncle starts with short u. The -cle ending comes later, usually late 1st grade or 2nd grade.
  • ugly starts with short u. The y at the end says /ee/.

These are for hearing the first sound. Don’t decode them yet.

Short u words with blends and digraphs (late K and 1st grade)

Short u shows up inside longer words once your child reads CVC words easily. These use consonant blends (two consonants, both heard) and digraphs (two letters, one sound). This is late kindergarten into 1st grade.

  • -uck: duck, luck, tuck, puck, truck, stuck, cluck
  • -ump: jump, bump, lump, pump, dump, stump, plump, thump
  • -ush: rush, hush, mush, gush, brush, crush, blush
  • -unk: bunk, junk, sunk, trunk, skunk, chunk
  • -ung: sung, hung, rung, lung, stung, swung

Read ung and unk as one chunk each. The n in them says /ng/, not /n/.

  • -ust: must, dust, just, rust, trust, crust
  • -uff / -uzz / -uss: puff, cuff, huff, stuff, buzz, fuzz, fuss (they follow the floss rule)
  • Blends at the start: drum, plum, plug, slug, snug, club, grub, spun, stub, scrub, shrug
  • Digraphs: shut, much, such, chug, thud, lunch, bunch, munch

Longer words where every part is short: sunset, bathtub, dustpan, suntan, sunfish, gumdrop

Read the longer ones in two chunks with a finger under each. sun | set, bath | tub.

Short u sentences to read aloud

These use only short vowels plus a few words your child likely knows by heart (the, a, is, to). The second set also uses and, a short a word with a blend. Read one a day. Let your child point to each word.

Kindergarten (CVC words):

  1. The bug is in the mud.
  2. A pup can run in the sun.
  3. The cup is on the rug.
  4. Bud dug up a nut.
  5. The cub had fun in the tub.
  6. Run to the bus!
  7. Gus can hum. Gus can hug.

Late kindergarten into 1st grade (blends and digraphs):

  1. The duck is stuck in the mud.
  2. A skunk sat on the trunk.
  3. Jump up and hug Mom.
  4. The drum went thump.
  5. Brush the rug. Scrub the tub.
  6. Gus had lunch in the sun.

Need a paper copy? Each of our five free short u worksheets is one page. Your child reads a short sentence, then writes it. a bug in mud, the pup runs, fun in the sun, bug on a rug and the sun is up. No signup.

Traps: words that break the short u pattern

Know these before your child meets them. A few common words look like short u words but aren’t.

u says /oo/, as in book. put, push, pull, full, bull, bush. These are real exceptions. Teach them as heart words. The u gets the heart. Watch the -ull family. dull, gull, hull are short u, but full, pull, bull are not. Same letters, different sound.

Long u, with magic e. Add an e and the u turns long. It says its name, /yoo/, in cub/cube, cut/cute and us/use, or /oo/ in tub/tube. That contrast comes later, with magic e.

Bossy r. fur, hurt, turn, burn, church. The r changes the vowel, so these are not short u words. They belong with bossy r words.

The /u/ sound spelled with o. son, won, ton, come, some, love, done, from, of, mother, brother, other, month. Same sound, different letter. These are heart words for now. (Mom is not one of them. That’s short o.)

The /u/ sound spelled ou. touch, young, double, trouble, cousin, country. This comes after 1st grade. Your child reads them later and spells them later still.

How to practice short u

Five to ten minutes a day is enough.

  1. Umbrella warm-up. Say four words. Your child pushes the umbrella up only when a word has /u/: sun, sat, sock, cup.
  2. Word family ladder. Write -ug on a strip. Your child changes the first letter to climb the ladder: bug, hug, mug, rug, jug. This goes faster with letter tiles than with a pencil.
  3. u or o? Short u and short o sound close, so read them in pairs: cut/cot, hut/hot, nut/not, cup/cop, duck/dock, luck/lock. Then try u against a: cut/cat, bug/bag, mud/mad, run/ran.
  4. Add the e. Write cub, tub, cut. Put an e card on the end and read again: cube, tube, cute. This shows your child why short and long both matter.
  5. One sentence a day. Pick a sentence from the list above or a worksheet. Read it, then write it.

Your child still needs to hear /u/ said the same clean way, again and again, even when the umbrella cue works for you. Our reading games say every sound in a word, then the whole word. Luvinci is a kindergarten and 1st grade app for ages 3 to 8, with no ads, and it works offline.

Questions parents ask

What are 3-letter short u words? The easiest are bug, hug, mug, rug, sun, run, fun, cut, hut, nut, cub, tub, mud, gum, cup, pup and bus. They’re all in the CVC list above, grouped by family.

My child reads cut as cot. Why? Short u and short o are close in the mouth, especially in American English. Practice them as pairs (cut/cot, hut/hot, duck/dock) until your child hears the difference. Short e and short i cause the same trouble. Space those two vowels apart first, then practice pairs.

Is put a short u word? No. In put, the u says /oo/, as in book. So do push, pull, full and bush. Teach them as heart words.

When is short u taught? Usually after a, i and o, around the same time as e. The letter-sound order opens with s, a, t, p, i, n, and u usually arrives in the third group, alongside e. Short u moves quickly by then, because your child already knows how CVC words work.

After short u: long vowels

Your child has all five short vowels once short u is in. When they can read short a, e, i, o and u words without sounding out every letter, the next step is long vowels. Many US programs start with magic e words (cut to cute is a good first pair). Others start with vowel teams like ai and ee. Either works. See long vowel words for all five sounds.

The takeaways

  • Short u says “uh”, as in up, sun and umbrella. Keep a relaxed mouth and a short sound.
  • Start with CVC families: -ug, -un, -ut, -ub, -ud, -um, -up.
  • Blends and digraphs come next, late kindergarten into 1st grade: duck, jump, brush, skunk, lunch.
  • Watch the traps: put and push (/oo/), cube and cute (magic e), fur and turn (bossy r), come and love (o says /u/).
  • Practice u against o in pairs: cut/cot, hut/hot, duck/dock.
  • Print the free short u flash cards: 20 picture cards, plus the full list and sentences. For all five vowels on one page, add the free Short Vowels Sound Mat. Then try the sentence building worksheet, or browse all short vowel printables.
